I came to Maureen originally to give up smoking which I gave up smoking a couple of months ago, now I have been a non-smoker since. I came back to do the weight loss as I have a weight issue, and basically before coming in to see Maureen my digestion was so bad that from the age of 13 and on, I had diarrhoea up to 8 times a day, intestinal cramping, I was diagnosed with IBS.
This is my final visit for the weight loss so basically at the moment my health has improved dramatically. I am insulin diabetic, my insulin levels have been dropping and my eating is now close to a quarter of what I used to eat. I had high blood pressure and it has come down drastically. My digestion has now gone to the stage now that I no longer have those horrible symptoms of pain, discomfort. I don’t have diarrhoea anymore. It has been the best investment of my entire life.

A Happy New Year

Anxiety Is Common, But It Doesn’t Have to Control Your Life

Anxiety disorders are extremely common, especially in modern Western societies. According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics, nearly 14% of Australians are affected by some kind of anxiety disorder. Anxiety disorders are nothing to be ashamed of, and if you suffer from anxiety, the good news is, it does not have to rule your life.  Anxiety is a very treatable condition and you have the power to control it so it doesn’t control you.

Is Anxiety Normal?

Anxiety is a normal human emotion that helps us to appropriately assess situations in which we should fear danger or harbor suspicion. Everyone will experience anxiety at some point in their lives – it is a normal mental safety mechanism. However, anxiety disorders are an exaggeration of normal anxiety in both the presence and absence of fear or danger. Worrying about your husband if he is 30 minutes late for dinner is a normal anxious reaction. Fearing that germs on public transport will give you a fatal disease if you ever ride the bus, is not a normal anxious reaction – it is a telltale sign of an anxiety disorder.

Types of Anxiety Disorders

There are many types of anxiety disorders that are housed under the umbrella term anxiety. Obsessive compulsive disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder, generalized anxiety disorder, and phobias are some of the most common forms of anxiety and they each have their own set of signs, symptoms and causes. However, all anxiety disorders make peoples’ worries or fears constant and crippling, and they translate to both physiological and psychological symptoms that include:

· Feelings of panic, fear, uneasiness

· Obsessive thoughts that are out of a person’s control

· Flashbacks

· Nightmares

· Heart palpitations

· Dry mouth

· Insomnia

· Muscle tension

· Shortness of breath

· Compulsive behavior

Above are just a few of the signs and symptoms of anxiety. Anxiety levels can ebb and flow. For someone with an anxiety disorder, symptoms typically intensify during periods of high stress. Anxiety disorders are thought to be caused by a combination of biological pre-dispositions and environmental factors, with environmental factors, particularly during childhood, being the primary cause of anxiety.

Is Anxiety treatable?

Although anxiety is prevalent, it is completely treatable. While many people opt for the pharmaceutical approach to controlling their anxiety disorders, treatment methods that focus on re-wiring thought patterns and neural pathways are much more helpful and get to the root of the problem. This allows people to reflect deeply within themselves and make fundamental changes that lead to healthier and happier lifestyles. Cognitive behavioral therapy, a form of thought monitoring that re-structures the way people approach their fears and reactions, is thought to be one of the most effective methods of treating anxiety. Other methods, such as Hypnosis, Neuro Linguistic Programming or NLP, Time Line Therapy are very effective.

5 Tips for Increasing Metabolism

Many people are keen on getting in shape, especially given the fact that obesity rates are on the rise across the globe. However, weight loss is not as easy as infomercials about miracle diets make it out to be. Indeed, there are false diet prophets everywhere but people who are serious about losing weight need to know that the only way to a healthier body is to sustain healthy eating and exercise habits over a long period of time—something that requires willpower and a positive system of beliefs.

There are many factors that contribute to people’s weight loss and weight gain and one of them is metabolism. Put very simply, metabolism is the daily amount of calories or energy the body needs in order to function. When the body takes in too many calories the body then gains weight.

People often talk about metabolism with regard to the rate at which the body burns the calories taken in. This is called the metabolic rate. People with a high metabolism burn calories faster and people with a low metabolism burn calories slower. The speed with which the body burns calories is typically an issue of genetic inheritance, but there are ways to speed it up naturally. Here are five ways to speed up the metabolism for weight loss purposes:

·         Exercise: regular exercise is the best way to keep the metabolism firing on all cylinders. Muscles use energy even when they are not active, and the more active they are, the more energy they burn and thus the speedier the metabolism.

·         Cardio: Honing in on exercise, cardio is a particularly effective way of keeping the metabolism running fast. This is because cardio doubles the amount of calories burned during a specific workout session. Aerobics, jogging, fast walking and swimming can thus make your body burn fat faster.

·         Eat frequently: That’s right, it is important to eat at regular intervals to keep the metabolism active and burning calories. Skipping meals, on the other hand, takes the body into starvation mode in which the metabolism slows way down to conserve calories.

·         Super food frenzy: lean proteins, green veggies, fruits, nuts, yogurt, Omega-3 fatty acids—all of these things help create lean muscle which in turn boosts the metabolism.

·         Sleep: depriving the body of sleep leads to a slow metabolism because the hormones and other systems get thrown out of whack. Stress levels increase as a result of sleep deprivation and this leads to both an appetite increase and a metabolism decrease.

The metabolism can be a friend to those seeking to lose weight, but there is no magic to it: no secret pill, special milkshake or other quick fix will suddenly speed up the metabolism for good. Six Tips to Quit Smoking

Despite how aware we are of the health hazards associated with smoking, millions of people across the globe still light up each day. That does not mean, however, that millions of people want to keep smoking. There are many who do want to quit.

Admit that smoking is also a habit

Smoking is often quoted as being an addiction. However it is also a really powerful habit. Have you ever found you have a cigarette in your hand and thought, “That’s odd, I really didn’t want this one!” So the question is often asked, how many cigarettes a day do you really enjoy?

Plan, plan, plan

Make a quit smoking plan. This may include setting goals and deadlines or enlisting the help of a hypnotherapist, find a way to approach smoking cessation with structure and support.

Make a full commitment

Quitting smoking requires a full commitment especially because breaking down old habits and building up new ones requires that you really focus all of your energy-no slacking!

Find a source of motivation

What is it that motivates you to quit smoking? Your life-health, your family, work, finances? Whatever the reason or reasons, know it as it will help you keep your eye on the prize.

Find a quit smoking buddy

It is always easier to hold ourselves accountable when we are accountable to someone beyond ourselves. Find someone who will support you or find someone you can share the smoking cessation process.

Cigarettes contain sugar and lots of it

So once you become a non smoker, you need to replace this sugar for approximately 4-5 days and then slowly wean yourself back to what you normally eat in a day.  This is one of the reasons why people put on weight when they stop smoking.  Their blood sugar drops and they eat, and frequently it is the wrong food, rewarding themselves for being non smokers!

The other more upsetting side effect of this is getting grumpy.  On her third day after her session, Paula phoned to say she didn’t feel or even want a cigarette, but was getting grumpy! Paula was asked how she was going with the fruit.
